Loxone or KNX? An honest comparison from a Loxone partner

For most automated family homes, we recommend Loxone as the core because logic, visualisation, controls and building services are engineered together. KNX is stronger when broad multi-vendor device choice, an existing KNX installation or distributed bus functions are priorities. A hybrid can combine both, with additional engineering and documentation.

Loxone and KNX are different categories
Loxone is an integrated home and building automation platform. Its Miniserver executes core logic locally. Tree connects wired devices and Air supports wireless components. Loxone Config brings programming, diagnostics and the visualisation structure into one project.
KNX is an open multi-vendor building-control standard. Sensors and actuators communicate through group addresses, while ETS handles project engineering, addressing and commissioning. The KNX Association states that ETS supports more than 8,000 products from over 500 manufacturers.
The choice therefore compares a coordinated automation platform with a broad standard and product ecosystem.

Where Loxone is stronger
One automation concept
Loxone connects lighting, shading, heating, ventilation, energy, access and security logic in one program. Presence can affect lighting and climate, solar gain can affect shading and cooling, and photovoltaic surplus can control selected loads.
KNX can deliver sophisticated automation too. As cross-system logic grows, the project may need selected logic modules, servers, visualisation and manufacturer functions to be coordinated.
Programming and visualisation together
Loxone Config provides function blocks for common building tasks. The user interface can follow the same program structure, reducing interfaces between automation and visualisation.
KNX allows the visualisation platform to be selected independently. This is valuable when a project specifies a particular interface, but it creates another component to engineer and maintain.
Wired and wireless in one environment

Where KNX is stronger
Multi-vendor choice
KNX offers a large range of switches, room controllers, actuators and design families. Premium architecture projects may require a specific material, form or control range that is easier to source within the KNX ecosystem.
Distributed basic functions
KNX sensors and actuators can communicate directly through group addresses without requiring every basic action to pass through a central logic server. Bus power, couplers, IP infrastructure and correct engineering remain important shared dependencies.
Existing KNX installations
A working KNX installation should normally be assessed before replacement. Existing devices and cabling may remain useful. The survey needs the current ETS project, group addresses, device access and topology.
Larger consultant-led projects
KNX can fit commercial buildings, multiple units and projects that require manufacturer-neutral specifications. Its standardised ecosystem supports specialised devices and structured topology. Operations, logic and visualisation still need a coherent design.
When a Loxone and KNX hybrid makes sense
The Loxone KNX Extension integrates KNX devices. Current Loxone documentation states that ETS, an external KNX gateway and a separate KNX bus power supply are required to address and configure those devices. Sensors and actuators can then be used in Loxone Config.
Useful hybrid cases include:
- premium KNX wall controls with Loxone automation
- an existing KNX installation receiving new cross-system logic and visualisation
- a specialist KNX actuator with no equivalent in the core platform
- KNX as a defined field layer while Loxone coordinates building-wide behaviour
The project must document where each piece of logic runs, who manages group addresses, who holds both project files, how statuses and startup values behave, and who can change both sides later.
Adding KNX for its name alone rarely justifies the extra interface.

A square-metre price is not enough. Compare identical scope:

- bus, network and interface components
- engineering and visualisation
- commissioning and tests
- documentation, training and backups
- future changes and support
Loxone can reduce engineering in a typical home through one coordinated platform. KNX can be economical when an existing system remains, specialist devices are required or multiple manufacturers are specified. A hybrid usually adds engineering but can provide the best functional result.

- Which software, licences and project files are needed for later changes?

Is Loxone a closed system?
Loxone provides a coordinated proprietary portfolio and interfaces to other protocols and systems. Manufacturer choice is narrower than KNX, while integration within the platform is tighter.
Can Loxone control existing KNX devices?
Yes. The KNX Extension can integrate KNX sensors and actuators. ETS, bus access, KNX power and correctly documented group addresses remain necessary for the KNX side.
What should the owner receive at handover?
